We have a lurker...

Longshadow peeks in on us from time to time, as a big 4E fan.

To give credit where credit is due.. most of these comments are his.

LOW MAGIC 4E

He once told me of an equation that WOTC DnD R&D Guru Mike MEarls posited about making 4E Low Magic.. Or at least low magic item oriented. Emphasis is mine.

Quote: If I remember correctly, it was a cumulative +1 to attack and all defenses at the following levels: 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, and 29. This kept things in the same general area as the bonuses for items in those levels boosting the same stats.

What you're not going to get there is the critical damage dice off of magic weapons.. but there is a general formula.

HIGH HIT POINTS OR LOW DAMAGE

Quote: If they object to the HP/Surge issue, might I suggest that you adopt either or both of Exploding Damage Dice (ala Earthdawn) and the Long-Term Wounds system from Ari Marmell’s Advanced 4e book?

I do have the Advanced 4E book, if you'd like to evaluate it sometime. It was one of the first unofficial 4E source books, and Ari Marmell is one of WOTC's primary freelancers.

I agree with Ryan, I wouldn't implement any of these tomorrow, but they are alternatives to consider for future games.
