This is a late thank-you, but deeply heartfelt, nonetheless.
Here's a bit of a confession for you. I enlisted at age 17, because I found myself in a situation that included drugs, school drop-out, and zero family. Soldiers became family, and all of these countries I kept going to became home. I did not ever have a single shred of patriotism within me. Actually, in the late 80s, you'd have been hard-pressed to have found a more anti-establishment kid alive.
Then I went to West Germany as an eighteen year-old. And I saw East Germany. I met people who lived in that country, following the reunification, that had to stand in lines to get their sawdust bread, their yearly 'vaccinations' aka saline-injections, and bone-meal sausages. I got to tour places that added meanings to enviro-disaster, such as yellow-coal burning plants. The worst was hundreds of acres of unusable farmland in Eisenach-the Russians dumped thousands of gallons of gas onto the soil, in order to lighten their APCs and tanks for rail-transport. Apparently, the Warsaw Pact never heard of the EPA.
Then there were other places to. The Balkans, for example. and all of the fuggin sewers down in Kuwait city; so packed with Kuwaiti corpses following Saddam's invasion, that Army engineers had to collapse and reroute the systems
And it really dawned on me. Americans have it good. We have it better, by several orders of magnitude, than the rest of this planet. Of course, I noticed little things other places that we could adopt here at home; laws, etc. But we enjoy freedom in ways even our closest neighbors do not.
The question and challenge has always been, and will remain thus, can we handle our freedom ? Do we, nationally, and in our communities, deserve it ? And do we understand that the trade for it is a simple fact that, you are free to advance, but just as free to fail ?
The kids coming in the Army right now, are truer warriors than the 80s military was. I say this, because there was no shooting-war on. These kids now, they all know that they're going to war. They see the same casualties and bad news that the rest of their peers are fed. Daily. Hourly. But they're still volunteering. Notice I said volunteering. Huge enlistment bonuses do not do this. Take it from an ex-recruiter. 'Lowering' the enlistment standards do allow for this; we still don't admit violent offenders, drug-users, and other felons. All of the smart kids get the same genius MOSs they always did, and the dummies go fix trucks or cook. And I'm here to tell you as well, that the brightest and most capable are most-often found... ...behind machineguns, carbines, sniper-rifles, and grenade-launchers. Usually, there is a '1' as the first number in their MOS classification. I'm awed by these youngn's. Simply awed.
Thank them, not I. I only schooled them in their trade. Their heart came from somewhere else.
Love and luck to you !

I've just recently renewed my WoW account, once I realized that the much-anticipated Warhammer MMO won't be on, for probably another year. Or later.
If you're also an ctive player, my toon can be found on thr RPPvP realm of 'The Venture Company' I'm Horde-side, with a 70 Forsaken Shadowpriest (Amaryste), and would like to go melt faces with someone I actually know. Our guild also has a lowbie sister-guild tagged as 'disGRUNTled,' where you can find most of our alts; I'd be happy to bounce around Azeroth as a lowbie, again. I've missed alot of content, since the Spriest is my 1st toon.

Roleplaying a brush with the miraculous isn't too difficult. Battlefields are, as you may have heard, crazy places. Little miracles are occurring all around you and bullets do the weirdest things. The reaction I've seen from Soldiers who should have not been around to show any reaction, depends upon their level of experience in CQC, and maturity. For the most part, regardless of those two factors, there is an immediate reaction of 'what the..?,' followed by disregard, then typically the Soldier seeks out a comrade and shares the experience.
This is where the saying 'it doesn't mean a thing, man,' comes from. It's a cold response to a young Soldiers looking for a reason for his existence, even though he should have been hit right along with his battle-buddies.

I told you we'd, at the very least, coexist well enough!

One *hell* of a start, Dan! I'm definately looking forward to the next session !

Oh, they'll get along just fine.
Obey the Laws of Rome, follow the orders of the Officer appointed above you, and loot / pillage only upon permission.
*shrug* How hard can that be?

The praenomina. Or, for everyone else within Legio VIII...
"We're on a first-name basis, you sorry-arsed lot! My first name is Optio; yours is what'er I or the Centurion choose to bleeding call you. Now get that scutum up over your head and hold it there 'till I get tired!!"

Appius Info: S: 15(+2) D:10 C:16(+3) I:10 W:12(+1) C:10
Feats: Gladius Focus, Shield Specialization, Improved Shield Bash, Legionary Fighter
Combat: Full Attk w/Scutum, Gladius: -2MH/-7OH w/ Gladius only: +5 w/ Pilum thrown: +4
Armor Class: Lorica Segmentata (+6) plus Scutum, Specialized (+3)=AC19.
I'm counting the Scutum as a LG. Wooden Shield, and the Lorica Segmentata as banded Armor. Is this correct?
Appius is built to withstand punishment, deal it out in turn, and to have a touch more 'common sense' than the average Legionnaire. He hails from the Lombardy region in Northern Italy, and was brought up on a farm. At age 17, he enlisted in the 8th Legion's current enlistment cycle, and has been with Legio VIII for nine years. He has his eyes set on making Centurion eventually, but will not lose his mind if he does not; he recognizes that he just doesn't possess the organizational and political mind that would shoot him quickly up to the top. Right now, he wishes to do the best job as a second-line combat leader that he can do.

Nice welsh spelling on the name, too! This is game should really be interesting !
If you believe that the government is all about looking out for the little guy, you are either horribly naive, or possibly a democrat. The government, my friend, is a machine. A machine that was once sleek, nimble and high-speed--but now has had extra arms bolted on, extra passengers have hopped in for a free ride, and someone has spray painted its windshield black. In its thrashing about, its as likely to trample you as help you out.
Ayup, yer right. Dernnit. Don't think I could bring myself to hack fingers off in order to move something a few feet. Then again...we leave an awful lot o' spare hands lying about some days.

I would also be fond of the item, as I plan on adding some necro touch-attack spells to the arsenal.

Having been asked by you two sessions ago, I looked through my meager collection. No, I do not have your book. On loan to me from other sources are two books; one from Jason (Drow) and the other I believe belongs to Emily (MM1).
Perhaps we can all throw a dollar or three into a hat, to replace your book? I'm sure everyone, at one time or another, has used it as a reference during a game. I'll throw in the first few dollars, myself.

So, this much I've gathered:
Iuz is making a play for overwhelming domination of the Flannaes, which would result in tons o' fun, in the form of death, destruction, and general unpleasantness.
Within Furyondy, is there a political, military or religious faction involved in covert military and intelligence gathering activities? Sort of the Greyhawk campaign version of the CIA / DIS ?
If so, then I have a concept for the character...

Then Ranger, it is. I haven't done one of those since the mid-eighties.
Let me see if I have this correct: shoot, shoot some more, keep shooting...then..when all else fails, um..shoot again. Seriously though, I like the Ranger's class skills. From an RP perspective, it'll be hard not to play myself, rather than some character's personality.
I know; here's a template: Clint Eastwood-esque, in the movie 'Outlaw Josey wales.' The steely-eyed killer, who eyeballs people, spits on the nearest dog, then draws down on the bad-guy. wait a sec.. That's still playing myself!
Heh heh.
"Brought to you by The United Nations: afterall, if troubles abound, we'll be nearby. Do nothing."
I have 'the shoot-or-stab-so-they-die-horribly' position...I think I'll give Ranger or Scout a try.

About damned time, lazy SOB.
Count myself and the Missus as in ! I can see her dancing for joy at the prospect of being a Sylvan elf. Heck, I might even try one of those pointy-eard folks, myself...or...Mario revisited.
Welcome back, Jason!

New game I've recently been introduced to, and highly recommend to any folks who enjoy wargaming. Actually, if you're a hardcore historical miniature gamer, then you might be a little unsatisfied; FoW is for those of us who do not want to spend 15 minutes of chart-referencing to determine what a burst of submachinegun fire did to the other player's squad (ala Advanced Squad Leader.)
The mechanics are simple and if you're at all familiar with GW games, you'll pick the system up quickly. You move, the opponent moves, you fire, he dies / gets pinned / laughs in your face, he fires, you blink and wonder how you just lost 25 infantrymen. Oh, and then there's the dreaded assault.
Now, the game has two or three issues I'll admit. The devs improved the performance of the Italian Army units in order to broaden army selection choices (and sell more minis.) There is also discussion about the game's oversimplification of the mechanics. Lastly, it's expensive. An average 1500 point army will cost nearly $200.00, after purchase of the actual pieces, then painting and construction of bases.
As far as the mechanics of this game, or any wargame, I can tell you from a position of authority on the matter, that no game will ever do a good job of simulating combat. This game, however, is supremely playable and at the end of the session, all of the outcomes possible with ASL occur with FoW....The tactics are same-same. One unit holds the enemy's nose, while another unit kidney-punches him.
I'd be happy to show mah freshly constructed Fallschirmjager Kompanie if you're curious to see the FoW look.
There are four types of people in the world: stupid and lazy, stupid and ambitious, smart and lazy, smart and ambitious; the stupid and lazy I put on the bottom, the stupid and ambitious, I get rid of them quickly, the smart and ambitious I put in the middle, and the smart and lazy, I put them in charge.. Feldmarschall Erwin Rommel CDR, Deutche Afrika Korp
As far as the Lorica is concerned, good choice. That item was typically left to the most senior of officers within the chain of command..Primus Pilus and up.
Dan, what will my basic issue be? I see that I am the most 'standard issue' of the Legionnaires here.
What else then, is all history, but the praise of Rome? -Petrarch
